Undefeated WBC World Featherweight Champion Rey Vargas is ready to resume his career—just under new management.
The long-reigning undefeated junior featherweight titlist is in advanced talks to sign a multi-fight agreement with Premier Boxing Champions (PBC), two sources with intimate knowledge of discussions have informed BoxingScene.com. A time frame for Vargas’ debut under the PBC umbrella has not yet been established although an announcement on the signing is expected in the very near future.
The Athletic boxing insider Mike Coppinger was the first to reveal the development through his verified social media account.
Vargas (34-0, 22 KOs) is coming up on three full years as a 122-pound titlist, claiming the belt in a 12-round win over then-unbeaten Gavin McDonnell in February 2017 on the road in Hull, England. Five successful defenses have followed, all in the United States under a co-promotional deal with Golden Boy Promotions which began with Vargas’ 12-round win over Ronny Rios in August 2017.
The 29-year old from Otumba, Mexico has been extended the distance in all six career title fights, including a competitive but clear points win over Tomoki Kameda in their title consolidation clash last July. The bout was his second straight headliner on DAZN, with whom Golden Boy is in year two of a five-year output deal.
As long as the 5’10” boxer can still make the 122-pound limit, political alignment suggested a clearer path to unification. Also on the DAZN side of the street is unified titlist Daniel Roman (27-2-1, 10KOs), who next makes a dangerous mandatory title defense versus unbeaten Murodjon Akhmadaliev (7-0, 6KOs). However, a matchup between Vargas and Roman never really evolved beyond the rumor stage, nor would the right business scenario stand in the way of such a fight eventually taking place
In joining PBC, however, Vargas will have a slew of options from which to choose in and around his weight division. Also included are unbeaten talents Brandon Figueroa and Stephen ‘Cool Boy Steph’ Fulton, along with lineal 122-pound champion Guillermo Rigondeaux, unbeaten former bantamweight titlist Luis Nery and Promociones del Pueblo stablemates Julio Ceja and Hugo Ruiz among others.
