The World Boxing Council (WBC) held its 2017 Annual Convention in Baku, Azerbaijan from October 1-6. It was hosted by president Mauricio Sulaiman; Azad Rahimov, Azerbaijan’s Minister of Youth and Sports Azerbaijan; and Boxu Potts, chairman Central America and the Caribbean Amateur Boxing Youth Pro League Program.
Emerging out of that convention were decisions that were taken as a result of new initiatives.
The WBC agreed that they no longer be reliant on AIBA in the development of boxing as AIBA decided to use the PITA, PATA style of boxing which negates the hardcore art of boxing.
The decision has been taken by the WBC to approach Governments worldwide for assistance with an amateur nursery to create would-be champions in both areas of amateur and professional boxing.
The WBC are in the process of establishing a parallel World Games to the Olympics. They recognized that there are over 30,000 amateur boxers wherein AIBA services only 2,000.
The WBC has structured a farm model by building a nursery for the nurturing of these aspiring boxers, through a curriculum to develop all the stakeholders, and in so doing, stressed that all of their boxers will perform on both platforms.
And all of the WBC representatives worldwide have been mandated to approach governments and its agencies to buy into this new initiative to promote and foster development in the sport.
