Ten bouts are slated for tonight’s event at Accra’s Bukom Boxing Arena. Conspicuously missing however, is the original headlining event featuring rising prospect and Olympian, Samuel Takyi.
Takyi was to be the main attraction on this card, organized by Bazooka Promotions and Management Syndicate card and dubbed ‘Winner Takes All.’
Instead, the undefeated Takyi’s scheduled national lightweight championship fight with Victor Kuwornu was postponed after the Olympic bronze medalist complained of ill health days to the bout.
According to Takyi manager Clement Quartey, the bout has been rescheduled for February 2023.
“We are looking at having the fight in February when he fully recovers because he is medically unfit to go into the bout.
“The authorities have been notified of Takyi’s ill-health but we are determined to go ahead with the show without the headline event,” Quartey told BoxingAfrica.com.
Meanwhile, the Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA) have asked their medical team to examine Takyi to prove his claims.
President Abraham Kotei Neequaye believes that a medical report would inform the authority on the decision to make.
“We have to get a medical report from our doctors so we will ask them to examine him before we take a decision,” Neequaye told BoxingAfrica.com.
“As the regulatory body for boxing in Ghana, we don’t want to allow fighters to dodge certain fights and we believe the medical examination would prove to us whether he is well on not.”
Coach Carl Lokko of the Bronx Boxing Gym, who is the trainer of Kuwornu, said its very unfortunate that the much awaited fight has been rescheduled due to the health of a boxer.
He called on the GBA to be very particular on the health of boxers, suggesting that everyone involved has a medical record and report.
“We have to be serious with the health conditions of our boxers and coaches, there are diseases that can be attracted by boxers, so they must be periodically checked,” Lokko said.
With Takyi’s fight off, the promoters announced during Thursday’s weigh-in at Bukom Boxing Arena that undefeated Issah Inusah will face Kwesi Tutu in an eight-round light heavyweight contest.
Along with this match, Jacob Tetteh Laryea will face Agyeman Boateng Prempeh in a middleweight showdown and Isaac Quaye meets former WBO Africa titlist Isaac Sackey in a bantamweight contest.
Also on the card, Elvis Mensah faces stiff opposition from Daniel Quaye for a super lightweight contest while Philip Nguah meets Francis Adjei in another super lightweight bout.
In a welterweight contest, Ebenezer Sowah will come up with Fosu Thompson as Delali Miledzi slugs it out with Kofi Manu in a super middleweight contest.
There will be a female bantamweight contest between Abigail Quartey and Pearl Adjetey; Issah Awal will square up with Daniel Kotey in a lightweight contest while Abdul Malik Adjei fights Emmanuel Okine in a bantamweight clash.
The bouts have been sanctioned and approved by the GBA.
GBA President Neequaye attended the weigh-in and advised all the boxers on the bill to put up their best performances. He ordered those who could not make the weight to manage their weights as part of the qualities of a good boxer.
The bill is sponsored by DiBella Entertainment, Special Ice and TT Brothers.
