Former five division world champion Floyd Mayweather apparently had an exhibition fight planned for this month in Tokyo, Japan.
Mayweather, 43-years-old, was scheduled to fight an unnamed opponent at Tokyo Dome on February 28.
The event organizers have announced their decision to postpone the show, because Japan’s borders are closed to almost all foreign arrivals – due to the coronavirus pandemic.
The event is being called “Mega 2021.”
Mayweather indicates the show will be postponed to a later date in the year.
“Japan currently has an increase in coronavirus infections, and I heard that foreigners aren’t allowed into the country,” Mayweather said in a statement provided by the event organizers.
“So it’s really disappointing, but there’s no way I can fight in Japan on February 28. When I’m allowed into Japan, and if Mega gets a new date and a venue, and if they give me an opponent, I can be ready to fight any time.
“I’m praying that we can beat the coronavirus and go back to a world that’s crazy about sports.”
Mayweather, who retired from boxing in August 2017, was scheduled for another exhibition fight on February 20th, against Youtube star Logan Paul.
That contest was also postponed, last week, with the pay-per-view event being rescheduled to a later date.
Mayweather was back in the ring in December 2018 in Japan, when he demolished Japanese kickboxer Tenshin Nasukawa in one round.
The 50-0 boxer indicated on Thursday, that he plans to have at least four exhibition fights in the year – the return to Japan, the contest with Paul, the bout with younger brother Jake Paul, and potentially an in-ring clash with rapper Curtis ’50 Cent’ Jackson.
