Like the rest of the boxing world, Ghana’s Azumah Nelson was saddened by the news that fellow Hall of Famer Pernell Whitaker died last weekend after being struck by a car.
Whitaker was only 55 years old. In his prime, he was considered the world’s best fighter, pound for pound. After winning Olympic gold, “Sweet Pea” captured world titles in four divisions en route to establishing his all-time great credentials.
On May 19, 1990, Whitaker defeated Nelson by unanimous decision at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas. It ranks as one of the finest wins of Whitaker’s career.
