Once a rising super bantamweight prospect, Wasiru Mohammed ended an over four-year layoff with a fifth-round TKO over Michael Tetteh Saturday night at Bukom Boxing Arena in Accra.
Mohammed, now 13-0 (12 KOs), hadn’t fought since January 2020. He was given a soft touch in the 0-3 Tetteh, who has been knocked out in every fight he’s participated in.
Mohammed’s ring rust was apparent early on as Tetteh used his jab and movement to offset his opponent’s pressure. Mohammed began shedding some of the rest in round three as several his power punches got through. He was also able to land the left hook to the body with regularity.
As Tetteh slowed down, Mohammed began to open up. A straight right in the fourth snapped Tetteh’s head back. Mohammed’s pressure was no forcing Tetteh to stand and trade more. With seconds remaining in the fourth, Mohammed uncorked a huge overhand right that badly rocked Tetteh. He was saved by a bell that rang instantly after.
Tetteh was still shaky at the start of the fifth. He was rocked by another right early in the frame. Two left hooks from Mohammed drove him to the canvas. Tetteh struggled to his feet at the count of nine, prompting the bout’s stoppage.
