Ghana’s national amateur boxing team, the Black Bombers, may not participate in a Zone 2 tournament in Cape Verde after they failed to confirm their participation due to financial constraints.
The Bombers are expected to participate in the competition slated for July 14-20, but financial challenges could rule them out of the tournament which will serve as a preparatory ground for the All Africa Games (AAG).
According to Black Bombers coach, Ofori Asare, the boxers are still in a non-residential camping in preparation towards the AAG in August, but needed to commence residential camping as soon as possible to ensure adequate preparation.
Mr Asare explained that their chance of participating in the Zone 2 tournament was in limbo following their inability to secure sponsorship for the competition.
The veteran boxing trainer and AIBA instructor, however, said the Ghana Boxing Federation (GBF) was considering a training programme with Nigeria, which, he noted, would put the team in shape should they fail to compete in Cape Verde.
“We are unable to confirm our participation for now because of some financial difficulties but we are still open to competing in Cape Verde should we get the financial support.
“The team has been training at the Accra Sports Stadium in a non-residential camping towards the All Africa Games but we are looking forward to moving to residential camp as soon as possible,” he said.
“We are also looking forward to hosting Nigeria in a training programme should we fail to compete in Cape Verde as we seek to prepare adequately for the All Africa Games.”
