Heavyweight contender Tyson Fury has long claimed that he wants the rematch with WBC world champion Deontay Wilder. Wilder is not convinced of his intentions.
They collided back in December 2018 in Los Angeles, with their contest ending in a controversial twelve round split draw.
During the contest, Fury was dropped twice – including what appeared to be a fight-ending combinations that had Fury down and motionless. In what many felt was a miracle, Fury made it up and rallied to finish the fight.
There were discussions for a rematch, and a deal appeared to be close to done, but the fight fell out after Fury went in another direction to sign a co-promotional deal with Top Rank and ESPN.
Now Fury has mentioned March or April of next year for the second fight.
Wilder believes Fury is not interested in a second meeting between the two.
“Fury didn’t want this rematch,” said Wilder to Boxing News.
“He knows he got knocked out, he didn’t even know how he got on the ground or was on the ground. That’s scary. He don’t want to go through that again. And then he’s telling people he felt the effects after the fight and how hard it was and how dangerous a fighter I am. I was informed that he was concussed as well, so I know he don’t want this fight, his family don’t want him to take this fight either, and that’s okay.”
Wilder was back in action last weekend at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, where he brutally knocked out mandatory challenger Dominic Breazeale in the first round.
And Fury is scheduled to make his Las Vegas debut on June 15, when he faces undefeated Tom Schwarz at the MGM Grand. Should everything go well, Fury aims to fight two more times before the year is out.
