The President of the Ghana Boxing Authority, Peter Zwennes, is aiming at producing a world champion from each region in Ghana.
According to Zwennes, who made this proclamation when he accompanied IBF World Lightweight Champion, Richard Commey, to pay a courtesy call to President Akufo Addo at the Jubilee House last Monday, Ghana is a country full of talented boxers and every region is capable of producing a world champion.
Commey is the second world champion the country has produced in almost a year. Volta Region’s Isaac Dogboe won the WBO World Super Bantamweight title earlier in 2018.
‘When it comes to bringing honors to this country in the area of sports, there’s none [comparable to boxing],” Zwennes said.
“We in boxing are abound with a lot of talent and I can say that if we have the necessary support from the state, One District, One Factory may be too ambitious but you can expect one region, one champion to happen,” he concluded.
Dogboe could give Ghana two current world champions. He is set to have a rematch with Mexico’s Emmanuel Navarrete on May 11. It was Navarrete who wrested the title away from Dogboe last December.
