Ghana’s Emmanuel “Gameboy” Tagoe will have to wait a little longer to fight for the IBF international lightweight title.
Tagoe, the WBO Africa 135-pound champion, was slated to meet Vyacheslav Gusev this Saturday, January 26. That bout has now been postponed after “Gameboy” suffered what is been reported as a fractured right wrist during training.
“Unfortunately, Emmanuel Tagoe sustained an injury causing the fight to be postponed, said Peter Kahn, Tagoe’s international advisor for Babyjet Promotions. “However, the fight has been rescheduled to February 23rd. The WBO Global and IBF international belts will still be on the line.”
Asamoah Gyan’s Babyjet Promotions will remain the lead promoter and Bukom Boxing Arena will still be the venue of choice for what is expected to be Tagoe’s last fight in Ghana, at least for the foreseeable future. The former IBO world lightweight champ signed a promotional deal with DiBella Entertainment and is expected to fight in the United States later this year.
The 30-year-old Tagoe, 29-1 (14 KOs), is riding high following a career-best, wide unanimous decision win over former world champion Paulus Moses of Namibia last October. The victory silenced critics who wanted to see the fast-handed Ghanaian tested against a higher level of opposition. Tagoe hoped to follow it up with an equally impressive victory over Russia’s Gusev (25-5, 8 KOs).
That will now have to wait until February 23rd. Big things are expected of Tagoe this year. He is now under the same promotional umbrella as fellow Ghanaian lightweight Richard Commey. Commey will fight for the vacant IBF crown versus Isa Chaniev on February 2nd. He and Tagoe share a history, having sparred in the past. A bout between the two is a mouthwatering dream for Ghanian fight fans. Both have a long way to go before seeing that to fruition.
