Professional boxers in the country are calling for transparency ahead of the upcoming Kenya professional boxing commission elections.
The chairman of Kenya Professional Boxing Commission Hillary Alila has announced he will not be defending his seat in the forthcoming KPBC elections.
KPBC, the body mandated to run professional boxing in Kenya is to hold its Annual General Meeting tomorrow at the Sagret Hotel in Nairobi.
The AGM is expected to ratify the body’s election date.
Alila said his wish was to oversee a credible and transparent election and tomorrow’s AGM would iron out any outstanding issues before members could decide on the definite date for the electoral process.
“I’m pleased to announce that KPBC will hold its Annual General Meeting on Saturday August 25 (tomorrow) at Sagret Hotel along Milimani Road, Nairobi starting 9am,” Alila said yesterday after a meeting with 20 professional boxers at the Laico Regency Nairobi.
Alila cautioned against suggestions to change the KPBC Constitution days before the elections.
“As we approach the end of our term in office, I would like to remind our members that according to our Constitution, it is the prerogative of the chair to direct the members on issues pertaining to the date and venue of the meetings including an Annual General Meeting,” Alila said.
He added: “Any other meeting held or called for outside the provisions of our Constitution is illegal and can only be considered to be mischievous and should be treated with the contempt it deserves. Members and stakeholders are strictly advised to desist from such.”
Alila said like any other institution they have had their successes and challenges and wished the incoming office the best in running the sport.
“The road has not been rosy. We have equally faced challenges. However, we have managed to commit to our core values of ensuring transparency in management of funds, sponsorship and commissions.
“This we have done in providing support for Kenyan boxers to excel and win medals in local and international competitions.
In doing that, we have been very keen in enriching cordial relationship between the Commission and coaches, match officials, supporters and our partners.
Alila said he did not have a preferred candidate, but advised the boxers to elect officials who will serve the interests of the game.
“Mine is to create a conducive environment for an election that gKPBC will be proud of,” the outgoing chairman said.
