WINDHOEK – Namibia’s Matias Hamunyela lost to Kenya’s Shaffi Hassana on Friday at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Queensland, Australia. The bout was held in the men’s 46-49 kg category. Hassana won 3-2 in the Round of 16 after three rounds of boxing.
With Hamunyela eliminated from the competition, Team Namibia will now put all their hopes on 2014 Commonwealth Games silver medallist Jonas Junius Jonas, who booked himself a spot in the Round of 16 on Thursday. He will face Valentin Kondakov of Samoa on Sunday.
Namibia’s Tryagain Ndevelo will make his debut at the Games on Monday, when he will fight Harry Garside from Australia in the 60kg category Round of 16.
Meanwhile, Namibia’s men’s bowls team of Carel Olivier, Douw Calitz and Willem Esterhuizen lost their fourth and last match in the Men’s Trips competition on Saturday, going down 28-8 to New Zealand.
Namibia had earlier beaten Canada and Niue but lost to Singapore.
In the Women’s Fours competition, the Namibian team of Anjuleen Viljoen, Lesley Vermeulen, Sheena du Toit and Marietjie van den Bergh lost 20-7 to Cook Island on Saturday.
In previous matches, Namibia lost 17-13 to Malaysia and 23-9 to Australia, while they drew 12-12 against Papua New Guinea. – Nampa
