Ghana’s Emmanuel “Game Boy” Tagoe claims that he is the richest boxer in Ghana. Tagoe, the current IBO World lightweight champion, says that there is no boxer in Ghana with more money than him.
“I want to say this on record,” he told Happy FM. “I’m the richest boxer in Ghana. In terms of money, no boxer in Ghana currently can compare himself to me because Asamoah Gyan and Baffuor Gyan are behind me.”
Tagoe also told the station that, “Currently, am the greatest boxer in Ghana.”
The comment may lead some to wonder if this is a case of a big fish in a small pond. Tagoe has fought overseas only once, and has not faced the same quality of opposition that his fellow Ghanaian boxers have. The best opponent on his dossier, Mzonke Fana, was 43-years-old and coming off a resounding loss when Tagoe won a decision over him in 2016.
On January 27th, Tagoe will make the first defense of his IBO title, against the lightly-regarded Fernando Saucedo. The bout is set to take place at Bukom Boxing Arena in Accra.
Tagoe says he plans to become a pastor following his boxing career. In discussing other notable Ghanaian boxers, he revealed some startling information regarding International Boxing Hall of Fame inductee Azumah Nelson.
“Azumah Nelson abandoned me because he felt I was going to lose to my opponent” Game Boy confirmed.
Whether this is fact remains to be seen. Mr. Nelson has not yet responded.
In closing, Tagoe also said that he would not allow his children, nor would he advise other children, to get involved in the sport.
“I will never allow my kids to involve themselves in boxing because all boxers have mental problems,” Tagoe declared.
