WINDHOEK – Namibian boxers Jonas Junias and Mathias Hamunyela left for Germany on Monday evening to participate in the 2017 Amateur International Boxing Association (AIBA) World Boxing Championships, scheduled for 25 August to 2 September.
The two were granted national colours by the Namibia Sports Commission (NSC) on Monday.
They expressed confidence in winning gold medals.
“Training has been going well, and I am really confident that I will perform extremely well at the championships,” Junias said.
Hamunyela echoed his compatriot’s sentiments, saying nothing less than a gold medal will be acceptable on his part.
NSC chief administrator Freddy Mwiya said they have got what it takes to win medals after winning gold medals at the 2017 African boxing championships held in Congo-Brazzaville from 17 to 25 June.
“We believe in you two, regardless of the challenges you are facing, especially when it comes to financial resources,” he stated.
The boxers will be accompanied by coaches Damian Ndengu and Kamangu Sivambo, as well as the president of the Namibia Boxing Federation, Benjamin Rebang, as head of delegation.
