Sparks will fly in the All-Africa title showdown set to take place on June 16. WBO Africa middleweight champion Walter Kautondokwa and WBO Africa interim middleweight titlist Obodai Sai (pictured) will settle the score at the Bukom Boxing Arena in Accra, Ghana. The IBF Africa middleweight title will also be on the line.
Lions Boxing Promotions, the promoters on record, have christened the event, “X-Plosive Fight Night.” A loss for either fighter knocks them out of world title convention while the winner moves one stop closer to their ultimate goal.
Kautondokwa has tallied an impressive 14-0 record, with only one foe lasting the distance. This will be his first fight outside of his native Namibia. The African country is a hotbed for boxing, evidenced by the success of unified junior welterweight champ Julius Indongo. At 32-years-old, time is running out for Kautondokwa but as the WBO’s 10th ranked contender, he’s in position to make something happen.
The 30-year-old Sai carries a 32-2 (24 KO’s) record and will ride a nine-fight winning streak into this bout. The WBO’s 13th-ranked middleweight will look to leap into the top 10 with a victory here.
“I am happy my managers have arranged this fight,” Sai told Ghana’s Graphic Sports. “If you want to be a world champion, you must take up challenges like these.
“You can’t become a champion without fighting the best boxers. Walter is good and that’s why I have stepped up my training. Ghanaians will see the real Obodai Sai on June 16.
Victor Ahiakpor, bankroller of Lions Boxing Promotions, described the bout as a real test for Obodai as he set sights on becoming a World champion.
“We are in this game to produce champions,” said Victor Ahiakpor of Lions Boxing Promotions. “We are not interested in giving our boxers cheap fights to build their records. Some say it’s dangerous to fight the unbeaten Africa middleweight champion but we see it as a good test for our boxer. We must give him fights like this to test his level of progress. This is the way to for him to prove to us he is worth the investment.”
