South Africa’s Zolani Tete is back! Tete will defend his WBO world bantamweight title versus Argentina’s Omar Andres Narvaez this Saturday, April 21, at the SSE Arena in Belfast, Ireland.
The bout will be the co-feature to a spectacular main event, featuring former two-division champion Carl Frampton taking on former four division champion Nonito Donaire.
Tete-Narvaez may steal the show. Tete, also known as “Last Born,” scored a one-punch, 11-second knockout of Siboniso Gonya last November. It’s unlikely he looks as dominant versus the veteran Narvaez who, at 42, knows his way around the ring. Narvaez (48-2-2, 25 KOs) is riding a five-fight winning streak entering this bout.
Tete (26-3, 21 KOs) is doing his best to call out the rest of the bantamweights but, so far, his cries have fallen on deaf ears. The 30-year-old southpaw is blessed with dynamite fists and is unafraid to engage. If he continues to dominate his opponents, the rest of the division will have no choice but to take notice.
Tete is also vying to be known as Africa’s best fighter, a title still up for grabs. Ghana’s Richard Commey made a strong case for himself last March, when he obliterated the previously-undefeated Mexican-American Alejandro Luna in six action-packed rounds. Another Ghanaian, undefeated Isaac “Royal Storm” Dogboe will get a chance to prove his wares when he faces WBO world super bantamweight champion Jessie Magdaleno next Saturday, April 28, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
Tete has already built a fanbase in the UK as they’ve taken to the calm South African known to dish out sleeping pills in the ring. He’ll look to make some more fans in front of the predominantly Irish crowd.
Tete-Narvaez will be shown on Supersport 5 on Saturday and replayed on Supersport 9 on Sunday and throughout the week. The main event, Frampton-Donaire will also be shown on U.S. network SHOWTIME on the following platforms:
