The Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA) continues to take steps to improve the state of boxing in the country.
The GBA, in conjunction with the Ghana Boxing Amateur Boxing Federation (GABF), the National Sports Authority (NSA) and the Ministry of Youth and Sports held a four-day national coach’s certification course at the Media Centre of Accra Sports Stadium.
A total of 69 coaches from 10 regions attended the event and were certified. Classes were taught during the program that included both practical testing and the in-house variety.
The course was spearheaded by current GBA president Peter Zwennes and former GBA President Moses Foh-Amoaning, who came up with the idea. Mr. Foh-Amoaning recognized the importance of these courses in not only improving the teaching up and coming boxers receive today, but also for the personal growth of the coaches.
According to the GNA, all the coaches in attendance were pleased with the program and the main lecturer, Ofori Asare. Asare is licensed by the International Boxing Association (AIBA). He was able to walk students through AIBA rules and regulations, as well as techniques and strategy.
Mr. Zwennes stressed to the coaches the importance of not only participating in these events, but taking advantage of it by soaking the knowledge in and continually working at it
Mr. Foh-Amoaning also added that those coaches who did well during the four-day event would qualify to take AIBA’s Star One coaching course. The GBA expects British boxing instructor Terry Edwards to also lead the certification course immediately after coach Asare.
Further, Mr. Robert Safo Mensah, Director General of the NSA, told participants that the exercise would become an annual event to further the education of Ghanaian coaches and to help promote the sport in the country.
Also present at the event were NSA Deputy Saka Akwei, Mr. George Lamptey, President of the GABF and other executives of the GBA.
