We have a fight! The much-anticipated Battle for Bukom clash between George ‘Red Tiger’ Ashie and Robert ‘Stopper’ Quaye is set for Sunday night in Accra’s Bukom Boxing Arena.
Both fighters made weight Saturday afternoon for a card event organizers Box Office Sports Promotions have dubbed ‘Rumble to Freedom. The IBF Africa super lightweight title will be on the line in the main event between Ashie and Quaye.
Ashie (32-5-1, 24 KOs) weighed 137 pounds while Quaye (20-0, 17 KOs) tipped the scales at 140 pounds.
“The battle line has been drawn now and I want him to know that he won’t be leaving the ring the same after the bout,” a confident Quaye told the BoxingAfrica.com.
“This fight is going to be war and I am calling on every boxing lover to hoot at me if I fail to beat Ashie tomorrow.”
Ashie refused to trade words with Quaye, opting for the higher road.
“Everything is set now for us to fight and I will be doing my talking in the ring,” said Ashie.
“I promise a good show for everyone to enjoy the fight. It is going to be fireworks but I’m going to be victorious.”
Sunday night’s fight night coincides with Ghana’s 65th Independence Day which is celebrated on March 6.
Aside from the continental title, the stakes are high for both fighters who seek bragging rights in Bukom, a town also known as the breadbasket of boxing in Africa.
Alex Ntiamoah-Boakye, CEO of Box Office Sports Promotions, appealed to boxing fans willing to attend the bout to be disciplined to avoid chaos on the night.
“We expect a good show from both fighters but the fans have a role to play to make the night a good one,” Ntiamoah-Boakye told BoxingAfrica.com.
On the undercard, WBO Africa featherweight champion John Laryea faces journeyman George Krampah and undefeated national flyweight champion Mohammed Aryeetey meets Albert Commey.
There will be an ABU lightweight championship bout between Joseph Otoo and Annan Tackle with an international female lightweight contest involving Ghana’s Yarkor ‘Chavez’ Annan and Lolita Muzeya of Zambia.
