Unbeaten WBO World Welterweight Champion Terence Crawford says he believes Mexican superstar Canelo Alvarez avoids facing Black fighters.
During a conversation on the AK & Barak Show, Crawford made the following statements regarding Alvarez, a three-division champion and unified world super middleweight champion who many feel is the best fighter, pound for pound in the world:
“He’s shied away from Jermall Charlo and [Demetrius] Andrade for a long time…When you look at Canelo’s career, it’s like he’s shied away from the black fighters. I think the black fighters give him the most problems.”
The undefeated Charlo currently holds the WBC World Middleweight strap. The former 154-pound champ moved up to middleweight and became Canelo’s mandatory challenger during the time when Alvarez held that belt. However, the WBC appointed Alvarez “Franchise Champion” which absolved him of facing mandatory challengers. Canelo subsequently moved up to 168. The unbeaten Andrade holds the WBO belt at 160.
