Lightweight contender Sheriff Quaye of Ghana is inching closer to a world title shot.
It’s been a long journey to this point for Quaye. Much has been expected of the Accra product but there have been setbacks, such as the hotly disputed points loss to Mohamed El Marcouchi back in 2017. And the stoppage defeat to Michael Ansah in their 2019 rematch—along with another TKO loss to Ansah in their rubber match back in 2021.
Quaye hasn’t lost since, notching four in a row to build his record to 23-3-1 (15 KOs). He is currently ranked 8th by the WBO in the lightweight division. That title is held by Ukraine’s Denis Berinchyk, who upset Emanuel Navarrete via 12-round split decision on Saturday night. Can Quaye become the next Ghanaian to challenge for a world title?
“I’ve been overlooked,” Quaye told GraphicOnline in a recent interview. “But like the rejected stone, I will become the chief cornerstone and break Ghana’s world title jinx that stretches back to 2018.”
For now, Quaye plans to keep busy, returning next Saturday, May 25, against the hard-hitting Michael Dodoo (20-2-1, 19 KOs) at Hathiramani Hall at Accra Stadium in Accra. It’ll be Quaye’s third defense of his WBO Africa lightweight belt. While Quaye isn’t overlooking his opponent, he believes he’s levels above him.
“Dodoo isn’t my focus,” Quaye told GraphicOnline. “The world title is. I’ll stop him. He’s a knockout specialist, but I have my own skills. I’m elusive and have a sharp jab.”
Remembering the night he received his WBO Africa title from then-President John Dramani Mahama, Quaye remains motivated. “A country like Ghana shouldn’t have to wait this long for a world champion,” he states. “I remember that night vividly. It fueled my drive to win a world title, and I’m closer than ever.”
Also returning on that May 25 card is WBO Africa Super Welterweight champion Jacob Tetteh Laryea. He’ll defend his title against hard-hitting Daniel Lartey.
The 30-year-old Laryea is focused solely on his world title aspirations. “My opponent is a minor obstacle,” he declares. “My mind is set on the world title.”
Both bouts are promoted by Swavyblu Boxing Promotions.
