Nigeria has registered six boxers to compete in the upcoming second window qualification tournament for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, scheduled to take place in Bangkok, Thailand.
Confirming this development, Dapo Akinyele, the Secretary-General of the Nigeria Boxing Federation (NBF), shared the news with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos on Saturday.
Akinyele emphasized that elite boxers from various countries will gather in Bangkok from May 23 to June 3 for the 2024 Paris Olympics qualifiers.
The focus of the Federation, according to Akinyele, is on female boxers, as they are seen to have a better chance of securing berths for the Games in Paris.
“If all goes as planned, we shall take four female and two male boxers to Bangkok but if we have to reduce the overall figure to five, we shall present three female and two male pugilists.” The seasoned administrator stated.
“We have to project and focus on our strength and I’m sure we shall cement our place at the 2024 Olympic Games,” he said.
Nigeria’s representation in Bangkok will span across the 50, 57, 66, 75, and +92kg weight categories.
During the first Window of the Olympic Games Boxing Qualifiers held in Italy, none of the 67 African contenders managed to secure an Olympic slot.
In addition to boxing, Team Nigeria will compete in various other sports such as athletics, badminton, female basketball, female football, table tennis, weightlifting, and wrestling at the Paris Games.
