Ghana’s quest for boxing glory at the 2024 Paris Olympics hangs in the balance after Joseph Commey’s defeat at the World Olympic Boxing Qualifiers in Bangkok, Thailand.
Commey, a light welterweight who stepped in for Samuel “Ring Warrior” Takyi, was just two wins away from securing his place in Paris.
However, American boxer Emelio Garcia ended the Ghanaian’s dreams with a unanimous points decision victory on Wednesday (29 May).
Commey’s loss adds him to the list of fallen Ghanaian boxers at the qualifiers. Featherweight Amadu Mohammed, heavyweight Jonathan Tetteh, super heavyweight Mark Kojovi Ahondjo, and middleweight Henry Malm have all been eliminated.
Ghana’s hopes now rest on the remaining two boxers: flyweight Theophilus Allotey and middleweight Ornella Sathoud, the team’s sole female representative.
Allotey faces Anvarzhan Khadzhiev from Kyrgyzstan on Thursday (30 May) needing two victories to qualify for Paris.
Sathoud, meanwhile, takes on Aynur Rzayeva of Azerbaijan on Saturday (1 June) in the women’s middleweight category.
This is Ghana’s final chance to secure boxers for the Olympics, having failed to qualify in previous tournaments held in Senegal (2023) and Italy (2024).
