Ghana middleweight Seth “Freezy Macbones” Gyimah has dropped out of competition for a spot on the 2024 national Olympic team.
Last September, Gyimah lost in the first round of the Paris Games qualifiers, dropping a 4-0 decision to Senegal’s Seydou Konate. He had another opportunity to qualify for Olympics next month in February but opted to move in another direction.
In a statement disseminated to the press, Gyimah, who at 34 would have been the oldest boxer on the Ghana Olympic squad, says he plans instead to continue with his pro career.
Gyimah is also a late starter in the pro ranks. In 2012, he moved to the UK to pursue a career in boxing. It took him 11 years to realize that dream, turning pro in 2023. He has had only two fights, winning both.
His inexperience showed in the qualifiers, a bad omen for fortunes as a pro. Yet “Freezy Macbones” is undeterred. See below for his full statement:
“I would like to express my gratitude to all members of the Ghana national boxing team for giving me the opportunity to represent my country.
“However, I will no longer be competing in the qualifiers for the Olympic Games in 2024. I have decided to spend the rest of my career developing as a professional boxer and focus on promoting great events with Macbones Promotions.
