Sena Agbeko of Ghana is brimming with confidence heading into his world title bout versus David Morrell Jr. on Saturday night.
The 31-year-old Agbeko (28-2, 22 KOs) will battle Morrell for the latter’s WBA “regular” super middleweight title, headlining a Premier Boxing Champions (PBC) event live on SHOWTIME from the Armory in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
Oddsmakers have made Morrell (9-0, 8 KOs) a heavy favorite. The Cuban-born southpaw went 135-2 as an amateur. As a pro, he went the full 10 rounds in only his second bout and captured a world title in his fifth pro bout. Still only 25, Morrell fights with the skills of a polished veteran yet has all the athleticism and power of the vibrant young boxer that he is.
Agbeko is undeterred.
“He’s good, he’s definitely good,” said Agbeko during an interview with BoxingScene.com recently. “I think he’s a complete fighter.
“He’s a good fighter with a lot of great potential. But at the moment, I think I’m better than him.”
Agbeko comes into the bout riding a wave of good performances. He’s peaking at the right time, having won five in a row, including an upset decision win over Isaiah Steen in October 2022. Most recently, the well-sculpted slugger scored a second-round TKO over Bruno Romay in October.
Morrell represents a significant step up in class. In a loaded super middleweight division that includes undisputed king Canelo Alvarez, unbeaten two-division world champion David Benavidez, along with names like Caleb Plant, Jermall Charlo and Demetrius Andrade, Morrell is considered the “Boogeyman,” the fighter no one dares call out.
Yet Agbeko has been calling him out for months. This fight was originally slated to occur in April, serving as the co-main event to the Gervonta Davis-Ryan Garcia PBC on SHOWTIME pay-per-view from Las Vegas. It was cancelled due to issues the state athletic commission found with Agbeko’s medical history and background.
Agbeko believes Team Morrell may have manipulated results to avoid him. Regardless of what one believes, the fight is now on and just days away. Can Agbeko pull of the upset and give Ghana yet another world champion? The world awaits.
