Olympic bronze medalist Samuel Takyi will return to South Africa on Saturday, November 5 for his fourth pro bout.
No opponent has been named but the lightweight contest is expected to be Takyi’s third fight abroad, a streak which includes bouts in Nigeria and South Africa earlier this year.
Team Takyi’s decision to travel to South Africa for their next fight cancels their scheduled bout in Accra on October 21.
“We have accepted to travel to South Africa again for our next bout in November,” Ike ‘Bazooka’ Quartey, trainer of Takyi, confirmed to BoxingAfrica.com.
“The decision was to fight in Accra next month and then travel to South Africa in November but we realized it will be too short to prepare for both bouts so we opted to travel abroad.”
Takyi (3-0, 3 KOs) last fought in South Africa in June, when he stopped Mandlenkosi Sibuso in two rounds.
The 21-year-old phenom made his pro debut in April against veteran Kamalrudeen Boyefio in Accra after a stellar performance at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo which saw him winning a bronze medal.
That bout has not been officially recognized by Boxrec.com, the official statistical bookkeeper of boxing, due to Boxrec’s issues with the practices of the Ghana Boxing Authority.
Takyi was signed by Bazooka Promotions and Management Syndicate, an outfit owned by the legendary former WBA welterweight champion Ike ‘Bazooka’ Quartey.
As part of the deal, Takyi is being trained by Quartey with the ex-fighter’s son, Clement Quartey playing a managerial role in the young boxer’s career.
“It has been a great year for Takyi especially when he just turned pro with the experience he is gaining for fighting abroad,” said Clement.
“It is turning out as planned and we believe Takyi is on the right path.”
Meanwhile, Takyi is ready to continue his progress as he looks to get into the world ratings by next year and can’t wait to get into the ring.
He added that he was looking forward to reaching his target at the end of the year by winning the national title.
“I can’t wait to get back into the ring to do what I know best,” Takyi told BoxingAfrica.com. “The motive is to continue being active in the ring.
“I believe that is the only way to reach my target of winning the national title by the end of the year.”
