Former WBO super bantamweight champion Isaac ‘Royal Storm’ Dogboe is in line to make a July return against America’s Joet Gonzalez in a featherweight contest.
The Graphic Sports understands that Dogboe is negotiating to fight Gonzalez following the cancellation of his scheduled bout with Filipino Eugene Lagos when it was moved to Dubai.
On April 21, Dogboe hinted in a post on Twitter that he could be fighting in Ghana on May 21, but that anticipated return to the Bukom Boxing Arena will not materialise.
According to sources close to the fight, the hard-hitting Ghanaian boxer is closing in on his return since earning a majority decision victory over Christopher Diaz in a 10-round contest at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Nevada, USA, last November.
“The fight is close and I can tell you that Isaac Dogboe will fight Joet Conzalez in the coming months,” a close source told the Graphic Sports.
“This is going to be a good fight for both boxers with good records. It is a good thing for Dogboe,” it added.
Comeback as featherweight
Dogboe moved up to featherweight after losing his WBO super bantamweight crown to Emanuel Navarrete in two brutal defeats in 2018 and 2019.
The Ghanaian, however, bounced back from the two defeats with a knockout win over Chris Avalos in June 2020, before beating Adam Lopez via a majority decision 11 months later.
Meanwhile, Gonzalez (25-2, 15 KOs) has recorded three wins in his last five bouts and hopes to beat his Ghanaian opponent.
