Lightweight Michael ‘One Bullet’ Ansah had a good reason for pulling out last Saturday’s Ghana Professional Boxing League card.
According to members of his team, Ansah (21-10-2, 15 KOs) is closing in on a Commonwealth title shot against champion Gavin Gwynne (14-2, 3 KOs) next, with a fight date to be announced soon.
Ansah, the former national lightweight champion, was scheduled to face Nigeria’s Prince Nwoye for the West Africa Boxing Union (WABU) championship in the headlining event of the latest edition of the DE-LUXY Ghana Professional Boxing League.
Rather than go ahead with the bout, Team Ansah has turned their attention to finalizing an even bigger fight against Gwynne, one which would occur in Gwynne’s native United Kingdom.
“We received a letter from the Commonwealth secretariat that Ansah would not be allowed to fight Gwynne if he loses to his Nigerian opponent so we didn’t want to take any chances,” Ansah trainer Charles Quartey told BoxingAfrica.com.
“Negotiations are ongoing for the fight to take place by next month and we believe that fight means a lot to his career.”
Despite the biggest fight of the night being cancelled, The pro league’s Fight Night III went ahead at Bukom Boxing Arena.
John Quaye of Sea View Boxing Gym earned a unanimous decision win over Seconds Out Boxing Gym’s Emmanuel Noi Mensah in a six-round super featherweight contest.
Judges scored the bout 60-54, 60-56 and 60-54 in favour of Quaye, who was crowned the best boxer of the night.
Quaye got off to a strong start, using his jabs to offset the hard-charging Mensah. In the third round, Quaye took the fight to Mensah, landing well to the head and body.
Quaye continued to dominate, working Mensah’s midsection in the fourth and fifth. To his credit, Mensah never stopped coming forward—and Quaye punished him all the more for it. The Sea View Boxing Gum star finished strong to secure the wide points win.
In lightweight action, Charles Yaw Tetteh of Panix Gym beat Solomon Nettey via unanimous decision. Final scores read 60-54, 59-53 and 60-53.
Enoch Tetteh of Sonia Gym scored a second-round knockout over Akotoku Boxing Academy’s Hope Mawuli in a bantamweight contest scheduled for six rounds.
