A trip to Clifton Amateur Boxing Club in Nottingham saw one of Newark Amateur Boxing Club’s young fighters secure a unanimous victory in the East Midlands Finals of the Schools Championships.
Fighting in the 42kg-44kg final, Newark’s James Jordan was up against Charles Smith, from Spalding.
The 12-year old took control from the opening bell, dominating his opponent from the centre of the ring with his jab to win the round.
“In the second round, James continued to increase his work rate, putting some really good combinations together,” said Irvine Taylor, one of his coaches.
“But round three was without a doubt the best as he really started to let his shots go and this certainly showed as the referee gave Charles a standing count due to a dominant finish from James.”
Suggy’s Gym head coach Dean Sugden said: “James did what he set out to do, not only taking the win but making everyone at NABC proud.
“Three rounds of exciting action, a dynamic performance and a well-deserved win from James, who I’m sure will go on to achieve more success in the ring in the future.”
On Saturday, September 18, 11-year old Joel Cook is in the 32kg-34kg national quarter-finals of the Schools Championships at Cotgrave Miners’ Welfare.
Then the focus turns to November 19, when Newark Amateur Boxing Club Home Show returns to Farndon Memorial Hall.
Among the bouts fans, families and friends will be looking forward to is the one in which Michael Lindsay will be defending his Super Heavyweight East Midlands Challenge Belt against Jack Butler from Mighty Mariners.
There will be more belt action as Sam Hardy, Alfie Briggs-Price and Chloe Davies box for East Midlands Challenge belts and several other Newark favourites will also be in the ring, including Joel Cook, Megan Williams, and Louis Clark.
Tickets are on sale, priced £15 for adults and £10 for children. Tickets must be bought in advance.
