Should he win his next outing, former heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder is going to push for a full division unification with IBF, WBA, WBO Champion Anthony Joshua.
For the last few months, Joshua’s handlers were working hard to finalize a unification clash with WBC World Heavyweight Champion cTyson Fury.
They were close to reaching a full agreement on a date of August 14 in Saudi Arabia – but then last month the contest fell apart when an arbitrator ordered Fury to honor a rematch clause due to Wilder.
Wilder’s trilogy fight with Fury is penciled in for July 24 in Las Vegas.
Beyond getting his revenge on Fury, Wilder is eager to get Joshua in the ring.
He feels Joshua and his handlers will use the British star’s mandatory obligations to delay a potential meeting.
“My focus is definitely on Fury… Once I do that [and beat him], then you already know what I want. But, from what I’m hearing, they’re already making up their excuses. You know we’re going to hear about mandatory [fights] and all that other bullsh-t,” Wilder told Ray Flores.
“But I want them to keep the same energy – they tried to make the Fury fight. He said, ‘It ain’t about the man, it’s about the person with the belts,’ right? We’re going to hold their word to that.”
Back in February 2020, Fury dropped and stopped Wilder in seven rounds to capture the WBC title.
Wilder has promised to do a lot of damage when he faces Fury for a third time.
“They should expect to see the mindset of a killer in the ring. Like I said, don’t come to my fight if your stomach can’t digest what your eyes are about to see. It’s about to get crazy,” Wilder said.
