WBC flyweight champion Julio Cesar Martinez (18-1, 14 KOs) had a game challenger on his hands. He broke down and stopped Joel Cordova (12-5-2, 3 KOs) in the sixth round of a fight filled with many exchanges.
Martinez was calm in the first, with Cordova actually getting close and looking to exchange. Martinez was picking his punches, landing well and not getting wild. In the second, Cordova continued to press forward while throwing a lot of punches to force exchanges with the bigger puncher. Martinez was countering well and going to the body, but also missing big punches.
Martinez was starting to do more damage in the third and fourth. Cordova was very game and continued to come forward while throwing a lot of punches. It was a brawl in the fifth, with Cordova still trying to fight fire with fire against the dangerous Martinez.
In the sixth, Martinez was unloading Cordova, finally got him in trouble and sent him down. Cordova made it up, but he was being battered with hard punches, wobbling around – which forced the referee to step in and wave off the fight.
In a battle for the WBA interim-junior flyweight title, Daniel Matellon (12-0-1, 6 KOs) retained the belt with a hard-fought twelve round unanimous decision over former champion Jose Argumedo (24-5-1, 15 KOs). The scores were 117-111, 115-113, 115-113.
It was a tough victory for the champion. Argumedo was dealing with a bad cut above his left eye, but he managed to stun Matellon several times times during the contest.
Welterweight contender Christian Alan Gomez Duran (20-2-1, 18 KOs) continued his streak with a knockout of unbeaten Jorge Perez Sanchez (13-1) in nine.
It was a gutsy performance by Sanchez, who tried his best to hang in there, but he was outgunned and eventually taken out with hard punches that sent him crashing hard in the ninth.
Super middleweight prospect Diego Pacheco (12-0, 9 KOs) broke down and stopped Jesus Moroyoqui (7-1-1, 4 KOs) in the sixth round.
Pacheco dominated the action and had Moroyoqui hurt several times in the fight.
Super lightweight contender Gabriel Valenzuela (24-2-1, 14 KOs) had a tougher task than expecting in picking up a seventh round stoppage of late replacement Juan Ocura (14-15-1, 6 KOs).
Valenzuela put down Ocura hard with an uppercut in round three. He was badly hurt, but the contest continued. Ocura was making it a war in many rounds, forcing Valenzuela to fight hard. But he was taking too much damage in the seventh, forcing the referee to wave it off.
