Veteran trainer Eddy Reynoso is hoping that his newest student, former unified heavyweight champion Andy Ruiz, returns to his winning ways in 2020.
Back in June 2019, Ruiz pulled off one of the biggest heavyweight upsets in history when he dropped heavily favored Anthony Joshua four times and stopped him in seven to capture the IBF, IBO, WBA, WBO titles.
The reign lasted six months – after Ruiz was outboxed over twelve rounds in his highly anticipated rematch with Joshua in December.
For the rematch, Ruiz was in poor shape and gained quite a bit of weight.
He admitted in the aftermath, that following his career changing win in June, he partied for two months and entered training camp late.
He parted ways with trainer Manny Robles at the start of 2020, and eventually hired Reynoso.
Reynoso is best known for his work with Mexican superstar Canelo Alvarez, but he also works with Ryan Garcia, Julio Cesar Martinez, Luis Nery, Frank Sanchez and several others.
The coronavirus pandemic has delayed his return, but Ruiz is slated to fight before the year is out – and the likely opponent is another Mexican heavyweight, Chris Arreola.
Reynoso expects Ruiz to fight again on a date in December.
“I had a talk with his dad and his lawyers last week, to see what plans there were. He has a fight taking place in December. We hope to prepare well, to combine well what he wants from boxing with what I can contribute to that. . Let’s see how it goes. I think he is a fighter who can give even more. Let’s see how willing he is to give his everything when he comes to the gym,” Reynoso said to ESPN Deportes.
