The proposed 2020 comeback of five division world champion Floyd Mayweather is likely off, according to TMZ Sports.
The outlet notes that Mayweather has been telling close friends that he’s likely not returning in wake of family deaths and the ongoing pandemic with the coronavirus.
The 43-year-old boxer has been away from the ring since August of 2017, when he stopped UFC superstar Conor McGregor in the tenth round at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. He technically fought last year, on New Year’s Eve, in an exhibition bout. It was easy money, as Mayweather stopped kickboxing superstar Tenshin Nasukawa in one round.
Mayweather had been in talks with UFC President Dana White – for the two of them to come together to stage an event in the fall, where Mayweather would return to action.
But on March 11, Mayweather suffered a tragedy when Josie Harris, the mother of three of his children, was found dead in her car.
Then on March 18, Mayweather’s uncle and longtime head trainer, Roger Mayweather, passed away after years of battling diabetes.
Mayweather was reportedly already reeling after the recent passing of basketball superstar Kobe Bryant, who was friends with the boxer.
And then factoring in the coronavirus, which has caused the cancellation of boxing and MMA events in March, April, and even in early May. There is no exact timeline on when sporting events, with large crowds, will be permitted to take place.
