Kenya’s Rayton Okwiri moved another step closer to competing in this year’s Tokyo Olympics, advancing to the middleweight quarterfinals of the Africa Qualifiers in Dakar, Senegal.
Okwiri, a pro boxer, is the Africa Boxing Union middleweight champion, defeated Emhemed Elmagasbi of Libya on points to advance to the quarterfinals.
Okwiri will face Kavuma David Ssemujju, of Uganda this Sunday in the quarterfinals as he seeks to return to the Olympic Games.
Okwiri was eliminated in the last 16 of the welterweight category during the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio, Brazil.
The 2020 Olympic games will be held between July 24 and August 9 in Tokyo, Japan.
