Former Commonwealth boxer André Thysse and former world champion Jan Bergman will be lending a hand to make the tournament a platform for these young boxers to showcase their talents.
It will be a first for local businessman Rashid Heiders to sponsor the first development boxing tournament 2020 at Turffontein Racecourse.
“It is the first time I will put my hand to boxing, sponsoring the local development tournament of the year,” said Rashid Heiders from Heiders Corn Chips, which is a local factory in Alberton.
“Thus it will be an exciting event for me and we look forward to see what the local talent is on the day.”
Heiders has a broad outlook on sport as he also sponsors three of the big Premier Soccer League (PSL) clubs’ matches, of which two are based in the South – Kaizer Chiefs, Orlando Pirates (Southern-based) and Mamelodi Sundowns.
“We are also involved in soccer and sponsor the matches with our brands.
“So this is not the first time we sponsor sport. We love to give back to our community and support them,” said Heiders.
The tournament will take place on March 1 at Turffontein Racecourse, where the main event will be between Raymond Kapula and Thompson Mokwana in the lightweight division over six rounds.
Mokwana and Kapula were stablemates and know each other from working under trainer Manny Fernandes.
“We know each other very well, but on the day the best man will win,” said Kapula.
In the undercard of the day, Joshua Studdard will take on Soul Hlungwane. Stoddard will be returning to the ring after a two-years lay-off.
“I am back and am very excited to have my first fight at Turffontein. This is what I live for,” said Studdard.
Former champion Oscar Chauke will co-promote with Fernandes, as he has now become one of the latest boxers to be involved in promoting the sport.
Former Commonwealth boxer André Thysse and former world champion Jan Bergman will be lending a hand to make the tournament a platform for these young boxers to showcase their talents.
The tournament will feature great bouts on the day, which include two women bouts. Matshidiso Mokebisi will face Muleba Raider and Lufuno Mutshayi will take on Nosiacwase Makasamelo Dube.
All bouts will first be sanctioned by Boxing South Africa. Other boxers in action will be Abel Ndaba vs Masande Mavumenwena, Lybon Ntshani vs Kalel Kadumbi and Shaun van Schalkwyk and Sando Jackson.
