The Western Pennsylvania Police Athletic League Pennsylvania Golden Gloves tournaments begin this month with several cards leading up to the state finals in April and the national finals in early May.
Several fighters from local gyms and communities, as well as those from throughout the Western Pennsylvania region, will compete for in-ring supremacy in multiple divisions and weight classes.
“Golden Gloves continues to be the most highly regarded amateur boxing tournament in the United States,” said Gloria Sztukowski Cvetic, executive director of the Western Pennsylvania Police Athletic League and Golden Gloves.
The Golden Gloves season got off to a festive start Jan. 25 with the official boxer weigh-ins at Gloria’s Boxing Gym at the Monroeville Mall.
The mall will provide the setting for the kickoff of the Golden Gloves schedule with cards on Feb. 22 and 29 at 5 p.m. each evening.
Cards also will be March 14 at 7 p.m. at the Millvale Community Center, March 21 at 7 p.m. at the DuBois Country Club, March 22 at 1 p.m. at the Holy Trinity Social Hall in Erie, and March 28 at 7 p.m. at the Wolfpack Boxing Club in Carnegie.
Boxing returns to Monroeville on April 4 at 6 p.m. with the Western Pennsylvania Finals. It all leads up to the winners from each region going head to head at the Pennsylvania Finals on April 18 in Scranton.
The National Golden Gloves Tournament of Champions will be May 3-10 in Tulsa, Okla., and it also will serve as an Olympic qualifier.
