Five-division world champion Floyd Mayweather admits that he barely trained for the 2017 cross-sport mega-bout with UFC superstar Conor McGregor.
Entering the fight, Mayweather was snapping a two year layoff after retiring in September 2015 with a decision win over Andre Berto.
The contest with McGregor took place in August of 2017 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, with Mayweather stopping the MMA fighter in the tenth round.
The contest was a major hit – with a huge gate and the second highest pay-per-view buyrate figure in combat sports history.
After the contest was over, Mayweather once again announced his retirement from the sport.
While Mayweather says he took the fight with McGregor seriously, he didn’t really train too much for the contest.
“For the Conor McGregor [fight], I didn’t really train,” Mayweather said to The Drink Champs.
“All I did was do pushups and situps. That’s all I did. Pushups and situps, box a few times, hit the bag a few times, because, actually, training camp was in different places. I would do training camp in Vegas a few days, [but] sometimes I wouldn’t go to the gym for a week.
“I took it serious, like I said before I wanted to have some fun in the fight and I wanted to entertain the people.”
Mayweather also explained that he also didn’t watch any footage of McGregor to prepare.
“My thing is this,” Mayweather said. “I don’t have to watch any footage of a fighter because I’m Floyd Mayweather. Everybody’s got to watch me.”
Mayweather has been talking about a potential ring return in 2020, with a possible co-promotion with UFC President Dana White, who has a boxing company in the works. There is no word if Mayweather’s will be an exhibition or an actual sanctioned bout.
