The Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA), together with the Ghana Boxing Federation (GBF) has launched this year’s edition of the boxing league dubbed: “Bukom Fist of Fury”, with the focus on extending it to the various regions after its first edition on January 31 at the Bukom Boxing Arena.
At yesterday’s launch in Accra, Mr Moses Foh-Amoaning, the initiator of the Fist of Fury programme, said the three-tier boxing league, which comprised juvenile, amateur and professional fights, would visit the Western, Central, Ashanti, Volta and Northern regions before the close of the year.
Mr Foh-Amoaning explained that the league, which was expected to unearth and nurture talents for the future, would take place once every month with 16 tournaments targeted for the year.
He confirmed that the World Boxing Organisation (WBO) Global Super Bantamweight Champion, Wasiru “Gyatabi” Mohammed, and Jessie Manyo Plange would co-feature on the night.
“We are looking forward to taking the league to the various regions this year when it kick-starts on December 31 in order to give boxers in the regions equal opportunities.
“This year, we are looking at taking the event to regions such as Western, Central, Ashanti, Volta and Northern in a way to help produce talents in every part of the country,” he said.
A member of the GBA Board, Mr Lord Acquaye, who represented the authority, called on Wasiru and Manyo Plange to ensure they won their titles on the night of the bout.
Mr George Lamptey, the GBF President, noted that he was hopeful of having a successful collaboration which was geared towards having a potent league after their maiden edition last year.
For his part, the Ga Mantse, Nii Teiko Tsuru II, who launched the second season of the league, expressed excitement at the concept of providing platforms for boxers within the Ga communities to aid their progress.
He called on the youth who were interested in boxing to take advantage of the initiative in order to compete and develop their craft towards becoming world champions.
A co-sponsor of the competition, Agricultural Development Bank (ADB), said their outfit was committed to investing in the youth to realise their dreams and believed the investment would help produce more world champions in the future.
“This is an opportunity for us to invest in the youth to realise their dreams and we believe putting it in boxing will go a long way to produce future world champions,” noted Alhaji Alhassan Yakubu, the Deputy Managing Director of ADB.
