Newly-appointed Chairperson of the Namibia Professional Boxing and Wrestling Control Board, former minister of health Dr. Bernard Haufiku, is impressed with the MTC Nestor Tobias Champions in Action event last weekend and revealed that his team has plans to keep the momentum.
The leaders of the Namibia Professional Boxing and Wrestling Control Board hosted their first event this weekend when the MTC Nestor Sunshine Boxing and Fitness Academy’s Champions in Action event took place.
Board members were impressed with the way the tournament was conducted.
The event, which was held in Windhoek with 11 bouts on the cards, was a success, explained board chairperson Bernard Haufiku and urged all promotors to work together to maintain peace in boxing.
“The tournament went very well I would said. First of all, it was incident-free, meaning that there was no knockout to the extent that we will get worried. Medically all the Knock-out where fairly well handled. I also have to comment the referees for their excellent work, The spectator behaved very well, the promotors worked very well with the board members who were supervising the tournament and boxers did their professional work. Overall I will rate this as a very good tournament” Haufiku said.
Haufiku shared with NBC sport the kind of improvement he wants to boxing overall.
“We drafted a short strategic plan, which will be our guide for Professional Boxing in Namibia. A budget will be attached, with an annual implementation action plan. Once you have a strategic plan you need to know what you want to achieve within every budgetary year. We have also identified key issues such as the boxers’ medical health” he added.
Haufiku also explained that they have to close the previous bank account to open a new one.
He could however not reveal what the difficulties with the old account actually were.
The board members’ have a three-year term in office which commenced this month and will end in November 2022.
