For a group of fans who traveled from Mexico to Las Vegas last weekend, dreams of capturing their hero in action came complete with a Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez victory – only for their journey to end in the worst imaginable way.
A private jet carrying 13 passengers en route round trip from Monterrey, Mex. to Las Vegas, Nev. was found in ruins Sunday evening, resulting in the tragic loss of everyone on board according to reports from Mexico where the plane was discovered.
The plane was due to arrive in Monterrey on Sunday evening but never arrived. Wreckage was found roughly 700 miles north of the final destination in Ocampo, Chihuahua, according to local authorities.
A flight manifest indicated 13 passengers on board, ranging from 19 to 57 years of age. There were no survivors among the small group whom made the trek from Monterrey to partake in Cinco de Mayo festivities in Las Vegas. The main purpose of the trip was to attend boxing’s major event at T-Mobile Arena, headlined by Guadalajara’s Alvarez in a competitive but clear 12-round decision over Daniel Jacobs in their World middleweight championship unification battle.
There was plenty to celebrate on the side of Alvarez and Golden Boy Promotions, but any such expression of joy quickly turned to sorrow over the tragic news on Monday.
“We are deeply saddened to learn about the tragic loss of 13 lives who were on their way home after the Canelo vs. Jacobs event” Oscar de la Hoya, chairman and founder of Golden Boy Promotions told BoxingScene.com. “Our fans are what make what we do meaningful, and we are grateful to have had them in our corner.”
Mexico network giant Televisa reported that the plane had changed course to avoid an incoming storm, although a full investigation is pending as to the official cause of the crash.
Regardless, it won’t bring back any of the lives already lost.
“On behalf of the entire Golden Boy team, we send our heartfelt prayers and deepest condolences to the family, friends and loved ones of those who have passed,” expressed de la Hoya.
