Former IBO world lightweight champion, Emmanuel “Gameboy” Tagoe will return to the ring June 15 at the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi.
No opponent has been named for this bout. The card, promoted by Tagoe promoter Baby Jet Promotions, will be titled, “Asamoah Gyan Fight Night III.” According to modernghana.com, Ghanaian standouts Bastie Samir, Robert Quaye, Sheriff Quaye, George Ashie and Bukom Banku will also be featured.
Tagoe, 30, 30-1 (14 KOs) was initially to relocate to the United States, where his next bout would be staged. Last December, he signed a promotional deal with New York-based promoter Lou DiBella of DiBella entertainment.
Tagoe fought last January in a bout that Baby Jet Promotions said would be his last in Ghana. Tagoe outboxed Russia’s Vyacheslav Gusev en route to a unanimous decision win at Accra’s Bukom Boxing Arena.
According to Tagoe’s camp, that plan has changed due to a United States visa embargo on Ghana. The team says that DiBella Entertainment has given the go-ahead for Baby Jet Promotions to continue promoting Tagoe bouts in Ghana.
An April 12 letter signed by DiBella Entertainment executive Alex Dumdroff, and Baby Jet CEO Abraham Kotey Neequaye, outlines plans for bouts in Ghana, bouts that would include former unified world super lightweight champion, Julius Indongo of Namibia.
“We are looking at assembling the best boxers in the country to impress DiBella Entertainment; fighters such as Bastie Samir, Robert Quaye, Sheriff Quaye, George Ashie and Bukom Banku would get foreign opponents to brawl with.”
According to this correspondence, representatives from both DiBella Entertainment and Baby Jet Promotions would visit the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, at some point in June.
Neequaye further declared their intention to fight WBA and WBO world lightweight champion, Vasiliy Lomachenko. Tagoe is ranked third by the WBO. Nevertheless, a bout with Lomachenko, who is widely considered one of the very best fighters in the world, pound-for-pound, remains unlikely for the foreseeable future.
“We are still poised to fight Lomachenko since Richard Commey has been dodging us. Our target now is Lomachenko,” Neequaye stated.
