Maurcio Sulaiman, President of the World Boxing Council, has revealed that his organization held an officially vote – where it was unanimously agreed to sanction a direct rematch between WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder and challenger Tyson Fury.
The two heavyweights collided last Saturday night at the Staples Center in Los Angeles.
The bout ended in a controversial twelve round split draw, with scores of 113-113 for the draw, 114-112 for Fury and 115-111 for Wilder.
The WBC’s mandatory challenger is Dominic Breazeale, with Dillian Whyte waiting in the wings for his own mandatory shot.
But the sanctioning body believes the Wilder vs. Fury rematch is far too important to delay – and needs to be done on an immediate basis with the heavy debate regarding the scoring and the outcome.
“The World Boxing Council conducted a voting through the Board of Governors, which resulted in a unanimous agreement to sanction a direct rematch between WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder and Tyson Fury,” said Sulaiman.
“Wilder and Fury gave boxing one of the best fights in the heavyweight division in a long time, which has created tremendous popular demand for the fans to see a rematch. The WBC is happy to confirm that a direct rematch has been approved and will create in a ruling which will also consider the mandatory status of the division.
“I wish to once again congratulate Deontay Wilder and Tyson Fury for their great battle inside the ring and for the exemplary sportsmanship after the bout.”
