Lartekwei Lartey, the trainer of WBO Africa super bantamweight champion Wasiru “Gyata Bi” Mohammed, has warned Isaac Sackey that he would suffer another knockout if he dares to demand a rematch of their controversial title fight in Accra last month.
Lartey was emphatic in his prediction that Wasiru would beat Sackey on any day and, therefore, threw a challenge to Sackey that they were ready to give him a second chance if he still felt he had been robbed by Beninois referee Adorn Bertin, as the boxer and his camp claimed after the fight.
In an interview with the Graphic Sports, Lartey explained that it would be detrimental to Sackey’s career to demand to fight Wasiru in a rematch since the new champion would be too strong for him.
“I don’t see a rematch taking place because I believe Sackey would avoid fighting Wasiru because he will lose on any day. He can’t just stand Wasiru so why are they going around telling people about being robbed. We are ready to fight them on any day and I can assure you of another knockout win for us,” Lartey said.
Wasiru (11-0, 10 KOs), the challenger, knocked out Sackey in the third round to claim his crown in a fierce battle on October 13 at the Bukom Boxing Arena, with the verdict sparking a free for all and total chaos at the arena as the camp of the dethroned champion and his supporters charged into the ring to attack the referee while others destroyed property, making it impossible for Wasiru to be handed the title.
Sackey’s camp protested the decision to hand Wasiru a technical knockout victory because they felt their boxer quickly got up from the knockdown and was ready to fight when the referee to stop the bout without effecting the mandatory eight counts.
Talking about their targets after the WBO declared Wasiru a legitimate, Lartey stated that his camp was keen on fighting for the Commonwealth super bantamweight title for which negotiations were ongoing.
