Emmanuel “Gameboy” Tagoe says that he will relocate to the USA after his January 26th bout, scheduled to take place at Bukom Boxing Arena in his hometown of Accra, Ghana.
Tagoe, 30, is the latest Ghanaian boxer to join Lou DiBella’s DiBella entertainment. Lightweight Richard Commey, who will challenge for a vacant world title on February 2nd, is a member of DiBella’s stable. And Ike Quartey was promoted by the New York-based outfit when he returned to boxing in the USA in 2006.
Tagoe, 29-1, 14 KOs, signed a three-year contract with DiBella. He expects the deal to culminate in a 2019 world title shot. Last October, he scored the biggest win of his career, soundly outpointing Namibia’s Paulus Moses over 12 rounds at Bukom Boxing Arena.
Tagoe, who has been criticized for his poor choice of opposition, is now embarking on a move that will surely test his skill level. In an interview with Ghana’s Daily Graphic publication, an excited Tagoe explained his decision to join forces with DiBella and what he expects the union to yield.
“I am happy to team up with Lou DiBella because I believe he has what it takes to transform me into a world champion,” he said. “They wanted me to fight my next bout in the US but we decided to have it here in Ghana so I can engage my final fight here with an emphatic victory.”
No word yet on who that January 26th opponent will be. The bout will headline the second episode of the Asamoah Gyan Fight Night series. The Black Stars captain is also the founder of Baby Jet Promotions, the local promotional company which promotes Tagoe.
Tagoe is expected to fight at least two more times in 2019. Expect the Ghanaian to be based in New York during that time.
