WINDHOEK – Former unified light welterweight world champion Julius ‘Blue Machine’ Indongo on Thursday launched a boxing tournament for amateurs to showcase their talents.
The first of its kind boxing show called the Julius ‘Blue Machine’ Indongo Boxing Show will be held on 7 September at Deo Gloria Sentrum in Pioneers Park, Windhoek.
During the launch, the former World Boxing Association, International Boxing Federation, and International Boxing Organisation titles holder, said the idea is to have the boxing show held annually, while growing it from a one-day event to at least three days.
“Our goal with hosting this event is to give young boxers an opportunity to fight, while at the same time win boxing gear that will help them in their boxing careers. I want this show to grow so that all amateur boxers in the 14 regions of Namibia will get an opportunity to come and compete in it,” he explained.
In its maiden year, the show will host 10 bouts, with the winning boxers standing a chance of winning boxing equipment.
Indongo said the items are meant to be motivation for aspiring, but resource-deprived future champions.
“I was once an amateur boxer, and I remember those years when I never had anything to train with. I decided to give back to the community by starting this boxing show, which I believe will continue growing so that in future, we will cater for more boxers, and possibly invite international boxers to come and compete at the show,” he added.
During the boxing show, Indongo will auction off attire which he used when he won his three world titles.
Tickets for the show are going for N$50, while a VIP table of 10 will be sold for N$5 000.
