Nigerian-born, ex-British boxing champion, Peter Oboh, has expressed disappointment at the state of Nigeria boxing today.
Addressing sports journalist at the national stadium Lagos yesterday, the former Commonwealth light heavy weight champion said that it was lamentable that a country with a rich history in boxing like Nigeria could not win a medal at the Rio 2016 Olympics.
“I am not happy with the level of boxing in the country. Nigeria has everything to top the boxing world. We have all the weight categories and the men to win medals. But our administrators don’t plan,” he said angrily.
The boxing star who won the British and the World Boxing Association (WBA) light heavyweight titles, said that Anthony Joshua learnt a lot from his mistakes of not identifying with his country and involving the media during his active days.
“I won all these laurels yet I am not known at home. But Joshua has been doing well in that respect because even in England, Joshua is known as a Nigerian. And that has been working for him back home as everybody knows him.”
Oboh also spoke on his involvement with an NGO, the MABELOBOH’ Centre for Save Our Stars, an organisation set up to cater for entertainment and sports stars who are in need of help from sickness or other misfortunes.
