BRITISH boxer Stacey Copeland is ready to lead Team UK to victory in Zimbabwe where she will also fight for the vacant Commonwealth title against South African Mapula Ngubane at the Harare International Conference Centre on Friday night.
Copeland, a former England Under-18 national football team player-cum-boxer, was appointed captain of the Team UK for the second edition of the event dubbed UK vs Africa.
The UK Team, which comprises four boxers and their trainers, arrived in the country yesterday to set the stage for what promises to be one of the biggest boxing nights on the continent.
Copeland is leading a team that includes Super Bantamweight boxer Marc Leach, Michael Ellison and Samuel Antwi.
The boxing extravaganza, which has two international title fights confirmed on the card, is sponsored by Kwese Sports and South Africa-based Kalakoda Promotions.
Copeland posted on her Twitter account shortly before departure that she was ready for the Commonwealth title fight.
“I am delighted to be part of the UK vs Africa show, it is a fantastic opportunity for all boxers involved to showcase our sport.
“I am honoured to be team captain for the UK team and I hope that during our stay in Harare we can inspire others to take an interest in boxing or sport in general.
“On a personal note, to visit such an incredible country and also fight for the Commonwealth title is like a dream come true, we’ll all be ready to put on a great show for the spectators to enjoy.
“I want this Commonwealth title more than anything! Can’t wait to get there, we’re ready to rumble” said Copeland.
Before she made the switch to boxing, Copeland played football for Doncaster Belles and the England Under-18 national team. Last week she was featured on BBC Radio Manchester together with her trainer Blain Younis promoting the trip to Zimbabwe.
