Nigeria’s High Commissioner to United Kingdom, Ambassador George Oguntade has agreed to lead England-based boxer, Larry ‘The Natural’ Ekundayo into the ring for his world title fight on July 13.
Ekundayo, who is due to return to the ring in London for the welterweight battle against John Thain of Scotland is said to be thrilled by the development. This much was revealed by one of his aides, Khomeini Bukhari, who also said a VVIP ticket to attend the fight has been presented to Oguntade at the Nigerian High Commission in London. Ekundayo’s commercial agent, Ben Gray, said that the boxer has very bright chances of becoming a world champion in a couple of months. He urged government and individuals to support the boxer’s dream, noting that many talented Nigerian boxers were not getting the support they needed to grow and succeed.
On his part, Bukhari thanked other Nigerians who have supported Ekundayo’s career, including a former governor of Lagos State, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, who made a financial commitment to boost the pugilist’s aspirations. Bukhari, who is also the director of Peel Aston Global, further disclosed plans to present a symbolic boxing glove to Tinubu, as a mark of appreciation for his support to Ekundayo.
He said: “During the fight in London, I will also be joining the Nigerian High Commissioner to lead Ekundayo into the ring during which I would be holding the ‘Asiwaju flag’ as a show of appreciation to the philanthropist.”
