Egypt ended their 2018 Mediterranean Games with 18 gold medals including three boxing golds from Walid Mohamed, Abdelrahman Abdelgawwad, and Yousry Hafez.
Walid Mohamed defeated Bosnian Adem Fetahovic 3-2 in the quarter-finals of the men’s less than 69 kg boxing event last Thursday. On Friday, the 24-year-old defeated Tunisian Ahmed Tabai 5-0 in the semi-finals. He went on to win the gold medal after defeating Spain’s Youba Sissokho Ndiaye 4-1.
Abdelrahman Abdelgawwad, meanwhile, competed in the men’s less than 81 kg event. He defeated Bosnia and Herzegovina’s Dzemal Bosnjak 4-1 in the quarter-finals. In the semi-finals, the Egyptian defeated Greece’s Polyneikis Kalamaras 3-1. The 30-year-old won the gold medal after beating Turkey’s Bayram Malkan 3-2.
In the men’s more than 91 kg category, Yousry Hafez defeated Bosnian Daso Simeunovic 5-0 in the round of 16 on Tuesday. Two days later, the Egyptian defeated Turkey’s Eren Uzun 5-0 in the quarter-fina; before defeating Frenchman Djamili Dini Aboudou Moindze 5-0 in the semi-finals. The 24-year-old won the gold model after beating Morocco’s Mohamed Firisse.
Egypt closes out the 2018 Mediterranean Games with a total of 45 medals: 18 gold, 11 silver, and 16 bronze. With 18 gold medals, Egypt comfortably sits in fifth place in the medal table. Many of the athletes will go on to compete in the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo before participating in the 2021 Mediterranean Games in Oran, Algeria.
