The Uganda Boxing Federation (UBF) wants their Commonwealth Games bound boxing team to hold a joint camp with their counterparts, the Kenya boxing team.
The Uganda Boxing Federation president Moses Muhanji says the joint training will boost both team’s chances in the games, set for April 4 to 15 in Gold Coast, Australia. It should be noted that Kenya plans to send a contingent to the Commonwealth games as well.
“We are from a boxing tournament in Dar es Saalam, Tanzania, where we performed very well. We have a good team and if we held a joint training camp with Kenya, the boxers will benefit a lot and learn from each other,” Muhanji told Citizen Digital.
The Ugandan boxing team, popularly known as ‘The Bombers’, will be sending a five-man contingent to the games seeking to rediscover their lost winning formula, since 1990 when they last won a medal in the sport.
They won three Gold Medals in 1970 Commonwealth Games held in Edinburgh, their latest titles coming 28 years ago in the Auckland edition through Justen Juuka and Godfrey Nyakana.
However, Muhanji says his current team is up to the task and can break the winning jinx in Gold Coast.
“All we need is good preparations within the next three weeks before the games, and I can assure you the boxers will benefit greatly and be ready for the games.
“We must seal the gaps and do something extra in our preparations to ensure we get better results. I believe Kenya would want this too,” Added Muhanji.
However, the request is yet to be officially accepted, pending a discussion between Muhanji and Kenya’s Boxing Association boss John Kameta.
“I was hoping to meet Kameta but he is not around. I will try to reach him later, so that we can finalise on this,” concluded Muhanji.
