Kingswells Amateur Boxing Club are celebrating after one of their young fighters became Scottish champion. Miles Robertson-Glegg, 12, won the 2005/06 schoolboy title at 46kg at the Boxing Scotland Novice Championships.
The youngster beat Sean Moohan of Linwood on a split decision to become champ at the Ravenscraig Sports Centre in Motherwell.
It was a remarkable triumph for Miles, who has only been boxing for a year.
Raymond Mitchell from the club explained how Miles got into boxing.
He said: “He’s only been boxing for a year but he’s taken to it like a fish to water.
“He turned up at the club one night with his friend.
“We’re doing very well for boxing in Kingswells and getting people to try it.
“We’re also running sessions for females.
“He was very good and was very clinical in his boxing when he won the title, which was very good to watch.”
Mitchell said it was a sign of Miles’ ability that he was entered into the national event despite not having a vast amount of experience.
He also praised trainer John Leys, a former British champion, for helping make sure Miles was ready for the big event.
He added: “We had no hesitation in putting him forward as we could see he was ready.
“John had him out jogging every two days and getting him ready one-to-one before the fight.
“Since he has gone into training, John has done very well with the kids.”
Mitchell also hopes there will be more talented fighters like Miles produced at Kingswells.
He said: “I hope this is the start of producing more top boxers again in Kingswells.
“We’ve been in the doldrums for a wee while but this is the start of something good.”
